My honest GLP-1 journey and the treasures that helped to get my life back, because losing weight is only half the battle
Welcome to my GLP-1 journey...
Introduction: A Candid Confession
Embarking on a weight loss journey is often filled with ups and downs, and in my case, it has been no different. My relationship with weight has been a complex interplay of emotions, challenges, and societal expectations. Unlike some of my fellow users, I have not always been heavy. When I graduated high school, I was under 100 pounds (I know, sickening!) But then life happened. I went on birth control pills, gained 25 pounds. Got married and had my son, another 30 pounds that I couldn't seem to lose. Divorce, heartbreak and personal losses (you know that "life" we talked about?) and suddenly I found myself at 258.8 pounds. As a person who has battled fluctuating numbers on the scale, I have felt the weight of the pressures of society and personal disappointments. It is essential to acknowledge that I am not a medical professional; my insights and reflections are drawn solely from personal experience.
The journey towards losing a massive amount of weight (100 pounds) often feels isolating, and I found myself caught in a cycle of hope and despair. I tried numerous diets, exercise regimes, and even considered various weight-loss solutions, none of which offered lasting benefits. Each attempt left me feeling more defeated and the only thing different was my purse felt lighter. I struggled to maintain a balance between optimism and the reality of my circumstances. Through this blog post, I aim to share my candid reflection on my personal GLP-1 weight loss journey, while also offering insight into the emotional and physical challenges that have accompanied me along the way.
As I explored different avenues for weight loss, I learned that understanding one’s own relationship with weight is crucial in this pursuit. Every day brings new challenges to face, but it also offers an opportunity for growth. This narrative is my attempt to express the vulnerability that comes with sharing my story, while also shedding light on the complexities surrounding health and body image. It is my hope that by sharing my experience, others may feel empowered to embark on their own weight loss journeys with a more informed and compassionate perspective.
The Turning Point: Rock Bottom
It is often said that one must hit rock bottom before they can begin to rebuild their lives. This statement resonated with me more than I could have anticipated when it came to my weight loss journey. My turning point occurred following a family vacation, a time that is typically filled with joy and relaxation, but for me, it became a source of shame. While reviewing the photographs from our trip, I was confronted with images that struck a disheartening chord. The unflattering pictures showcased my physical state in stark contrast to the fun and vibrant experiences I believed I had been enjoying. It was totally eye opening.
For the first time, I acknowledged the unhealthy habits I had become used to. The excess weight was not just a number on a scale; it reflected a lifestyle devoid of balance. It was an eye-opening experience that highlighted the disconnect between my self-perception and reality. Eating habits that I had brushed off as harmless were now glaringly evident, exposed against the backdrop of my loved ones who were active and full of life. This moment became a catalyst for change, compelling me to reevaluate my relationship with food and my approach to wellness.
As I gathered the courage to confront these issues, I felt an urgency to take action. The despair of realizing how my lifestyle choices had led me to this point fueled a determination that had been absent for far too long. It was no longer an option to continue down a path that brought me shame and discomfort. Instead, I began to formulate a plan to tackle my weight loss challenges. This turning point marked the beginning of a journey towards better health and self-acceptance, urging me to transform my despair into hope.
The Journey Begins: Researching GLP-1 Medications
Embarking on a weight loss journey often requires thorough research and a solid understanding of the available options. For me, this journey began with an exploration of GLP-1 medications, particularly Ozempic and Zepbound. These drugs, which mimic the action of the glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), have gained attention due to their efficacy in promoting weight loss and improving metabolic health. The mechanism of action of these medications involves slowing gastric emptying, reducing appetite, and enhancing insulin secretion, which can be crucial for individuals grappling with obesity.
Initially, I focused on understanding the differences between Ozempic and Zepbound. While Ozempic had already been established as a popular choice, Zepbound was generating considerable buzz due to its dual-action mechanism—modulating both GLP-1 and GIP (gastric inhibitory polypeptide) receptors. This dual action suggested that Zepbound could potentially offer greater weight loss benefits than its predecessor. As I meticulously read scientific studies, patient testimonials, and expert opinions, I became increasingly intrigued by the promise of these medications.
The decision-making process was multifaceted. Factors such as effectiveness, side effects, cost, and accessibility played pivotal roles. Consulting with healthcare professionals added another layer of insight, allowing me to consider my personal circumstances and health history. Understanding the risks and benefits associated with each medication was crucial. But ultimately, it came down to costs, my insurance wouldn't cover any weight loss medication. So,after weighing my options, I found that Tirzepatide aligned more closely with my goals.
Misconceptions of the "Miracle Drug"
The emergence of GLP-1 medications has led many individuals to view them as miracle drugs for weight loss. This perception is driven by numerous success stories and the apparent ease of achieving significant weight reduction. However, these expectations can often be misleading. It is essential to understand that while GLP-1 medications can aid in weight loss, they are not a "miracle"and should not be solely relied upon for results.
Initially, I, too, fell into the trap of believing that simply taking a prescribed medication would yield miraculous results. Like the celebrities I saw on TV, I expected to go to bed 258 pounds and wake up at 125 pounds. I expected the pounds to shed themselves without any significant effort on my part. Unfortunately, it became very clear that I was wrong. Although GLP-1 medications can help regulate appetite and promote feelings of fullness, they work best in conjunction with lifestyle changes such as a balanced diet and regular physical activity.
In reality, the efficiency of these drugs is contingent upon the commitment to adopt a healthier lifestyle. Many users discover that without the inclusion of consistent exercise and nutritional adjustments, the results can be disappointing. Furthermore, the side effects associated with GLP-1 medications should not be overlooked. Users can experience nausea, diarrhea, hair thinning, insomnia, fatigue or other gastrointestinal issues that may detract from their overall journey towards weight loss.
Therefore, it is crucial to approach GLP-1 medications with realistic expectations. They can certainly support weight loss efforts, but it will take effort on your part. Understanding these realities can help with disappointment and allow for a more sustainable weight loss journey.
The Dietary Shift: Nutrition Adjustments
Embarking on a weight loss journey requires not only determination but also significant changes in dietary habits. Throughout my personal GLP-1 weight loss journey, I undertook several nutritional adjustments that were cruicial in achieving my goals. The first major adjustment involved increasing my protein intake. I learned that integrating more protein-rich foods into my meals promotes satiety, helping to curb hunger and decrease overall calorie consumption. Lean meats, legumes, and dairy products became staples in my daily meals.
In my search for enjoyable sources of protein, I discovered a variety of protein shakes and bars that I found delicious. These shakes and bars became convenient meal replacements and snacks, allowing me to maintain my protein goals while on the go. Finding flavors I loved made it easier to stick with my plan and integrate these shakes regularly into my routine. Additionally, experimenting with homemade protein bars and smoothies opened up further nutritional avenues, making my dietary shifts exciting rather than restrictive. I had never been a shake or milk person, but I began to crave my protein shake each morning.
Staying hydrated played another essential role. I made a conscious effort to increase my water intake. Proper hydration not only supports bodily functions but also helps control appetite. I aimed for a consistent daily goal, utilizing apps and reminders to ensure I met my hydration targets.
Lastly, I recognized the need to reduce my intake of sugars and carbohydrates, which often led to unwanted weight gain. I began substituting high-sugar snacks with healthier alternatives, such as fruits and nuts, as well as protein bars and zero-sugar candies, which provided the necessary energy without the added sugars. As a result, my dietary adjustments not only supported my weight loss efforts but also improved my overall health and well-being.
Overcoming Challenges: Side Effects and Hurdles
Embarking on a weight loss journey can be filled with unexpected challenges, particularly when starting a medication like GLP-1 agonists into one’s routine. One of the most significant hurdles I faced were the side effects, which often included nausea and constipation. These side effects can be daunting for anyone, and my experience was no exception. Initially, the feeling of nausea was overwhelming, making it difficult to consume meals and ultimately impacting my nutritional intake.
To cope with these side effects, I made several adjustments to my routine. First, I learned to modify my meal portions and the types of food I consumed. Smaller, more frequent meals seemed to alleviate the nausea significantly. I also ensured I stayed hydrated, as dehydration can exacerbate nausea. This approach allowed me to continue with the medication while gradually reintroducing a more realistic diet as my body adjusted to the GLP-1 injections.
Constipation was a huge challenge that I encountered during my weight loss journey. Initially, this issue added to my discomfort, resulting in further distress and reluctance to continue the medication. However, while I quickly recognized the importance of dietary fiber in mitigating constipation, I found that diet alone did not help. That's when I started trying different laxatives and supplements. Nothing was working until I happened upon a Facebook commercial last one night. I thought, well here goes another $20-$25 but I was willing to try anything that could possibly work. I read where people were finding immediate relief and let me tell you I was NOT one of them. As a matter of fact, after taking it for 2 weeks, I responded on their ad for the whole world to see "SCAM!! DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!! They responded within hours offering my money back. I kept taking it every night thinking, don't even ask me why, I can only say desperation. Then after about 18 days of taking the supplement, it happened. A regular movement (not the explosive kind like after practically OD'ing on laxatives and cleanses). Then it happened again, the next day and 2 days later again. Are you freaking kidding me?!!! As I said earlier, I had never been the once a day/everyday person so once every couple of days is my normal and it was fabulous! I was telling everyone about my trips to the restroom....I was just ecstatic!
Conclusion: Reflections and Future Goals
I started my journey on October 18, 2025, by Christmas 2025, I had lost 35 pounds. While continuing my journey, looking the future, my goals remain ambitious yet attainable. I aim to continue my journey while also focusing on trying to add more exercise, still haven't gotten all of that down pat yet. But I am going to try incorporating more varied activities into my routine and hopefully this will not only assist in obtaining my weight loss but will also help my overall health.
Ultimately, I aspire to inspire others who are in similar situations, instilling hope and showing that positive change is indeed possible. I am sharing the things I found during my journey that helped me the most.
Keep following my blog as my story continues. I hope to add weight loss tips, recipes, supplements and resources each week.
